I think the quality of my work is not to my standard. i think that i need to improve my writing and reading skills.

i dont realy put alot of effort into my work and in lessons however at times i do try i could try alot more harder with my independant study.

my punctuality has been good i havnt been late to any of the lessons or there mite have been the odd 1 or 2 however it has been good this year.

Review

Though it's a madcap comedy, MY WIFE AND KIDS' comic formula centers on the family's dynamic.

Mom Janet (Tisha Campbell) is the breadwinner and sets the bottom line, Dad Michael (Damon Wayans) is the caregiver and the loose screw, son Michael Jr. (George Gore II) is a dolt, elder daughter Claire (played by both Jazz Raycole and Jennifer Freeman) is a clumsy beauty, and youngest daughter Kady (Parker McKenna Posey) is smart and sassy.

Family members constantly gang up on each other before sharing advice and love at the end of the show. What happens in between is where the series goes awry. Serious issues like teen pregnancy, fear of acceptance, drug use, body image, and valuing a spouse's contribution to the household are mixed in with ridiculous behavior; slaps, threats, and anger are thrown around.

The issues themselves are often glossed over, and the fact that they're addressed at all shouldn't overshadow the reality that the adults might handle them poorly.

Janet and Michael admonish their kids' chaotic behavior at the same time that they exhibit very childish behavior themselves -- it might be difficult for tweens and young teens to understand what's meaningless banter and what's inappropriate behavior.

blaxploitation film - film of 1960s and 70s in which black actors featured in principal roles usually associated with whites.

Cultural effects theory - audience theory which argues that, in absence of real substantial evidence of the direct relationship between media texts and people's behaviour, the effects of exposure to the media should be seen as long term and more subtle.

MEDIA LANGUAGE

The cinematography that the show uses are family medium shots and closs ups. They use these type of shots as the audience are able to see the surroundings and are also able to see what is going on in the scene, they also use close shots of the characters faces to show expresions after someting shocking happens, as the genre is comedy the type fo expressions that are show are over exhadurated to make the audience laugh. they editing of the show is very basic as they dont use fast pace cuts and at times they dont use cuts at all, as the characters are all in one shot.The mise-en-scéne of the show is a family house, were the shots mainly take place in the kitchen or living room, however they have other sets such as the rooms bathroom and garage. the setting is of a house set in america, the house is large and shows how the family are, they seem to be working class people. the clothing they have are set for the charaters age group and gender, as claire would be wearing clothes that are in fashion and trendy, while Jr. wears clothes like his farther would wear. the lighting is natural lighting as they try to show that the house is bright to give the audience the impression that the family is up beat and frendly. the show has a sound bridge from a shot outside the house going into the house were it fades down. there are not any voice overs, however in some scences some of the characters may be thinking and only the audince are able to know what is being said. this would give the audince that they know more than the actual charaters and are able to interact with them.

INSTITUTION

The show is shown on two different channels, one being Trouble TV and the outher Channel 4. The programme is produced and directed by the ‘Wayne bros’.t comes on trouble at 6pm and later at 10pm. It is shown at these particular times as it can watch by any one as it can appeal to a variety- of different people as the characters are of different ages.

GENRE

the type of genre that the programme is, comedy genre. the show is based on family life and family issues and how each character is able to come one as a family. the audince would are able to relfect on this as they can see what goes on in this family and relate to what happens in their family. for example Jr. getting his girlfriend pregnant and having the child. as there are people who do have a child at a young age would be able to reflect on this however having humor to it. such as when Jr. had to meet vanesas parents. the show can be compared to programmes such as ' the cosbi show'. the prgramme is a closed narrative as each show has a new story to it.

REPRESENTATION

the show represents family life and issues. the show focuses on one main character Micheale who is the father, and shows how he would handle situations and twist them to make each person in the house suffer as a punishment, however not making them suffer brutaly and more like punishments that are exadurated. as the show is of a black family the people that are most likely to be represented are black people of all ages. the stereotypes that poeple have of black people are very neggative as they would think that all black people are drugg additcs, thiefs and thugs. by wathcing this type of show the sterotypes come away from black people as the audience are able to see black people in a more postive way.

AUDIENCE

the audince for this type of programme would mainly be teenagers however, as the show consists of different characters of all ages any one can watch it, as the show doesnt have scences that are not sutible for a younger aundiece. this would be good for the audinces as they are able to relate to a particular character. for example Jay thinks as she is becoming old she doesnt look attractive and as many women become older they tend to become more paronoid (LOL). so they are able to relate to them.

IDEOLOGIES AND VALUES

family life and family values. as family is one of the most important aspects in this show it is important that the family is shown in a postive and strong aspect. the audience are able to relate to this as they would see how the family is and also want to be like them. as the family is shown to be happy and caring.

NARRATIVE

Open narrative, the programme does not have a continuous narrative, as in each episode there is a different story.

About The Show

The show is set in Stamford, Connecticut. In the Kyle family, Damon Wayne stars as Michael Kyle, and Tisha Campbell-Martin stars as his wife Jay. George O. Gore II stars as Michael Kyle, Jr. Jennifer Freeman plays Claire Kyle, and Parker McKenna Posey plays Kady Kyle. Andrew McFarlane was added as a regular guest star in the second season as Tony, Claire's boyfriend. Noah Gray-Cabey guest starred in a third-season episode as Kady's 'boyfriend', Franklin, who is a super genius and hence creates jokes that almost no one understands and is consulted by Michael on various occasions. He then appeared normally until the end. Brooklyn Sudano plays Vanessa, Junior's wife and mother to his baby, Junior Junior. Some have compared the show to a current-day version of The Cosby Show. While there may be many similarities, there are also some differences. The main similarity is that both are situation comedies that chronicle the day-to-day lives of an upper-middle class African-American family. A difference may be that The Cosby Show was set in an older era, where-as some of the comedy of "My Wife and Kids" may not be socially acceptable in the late 1980's; for example, the storyline of Junior getting his girlfriend pregnant and then marrying her.

How are black people represented in the media today, with particular focus on ‘My Wife And Kids?

My independent study will focus on the representation on black people in the media today, in particular for the programme ‘My Wife And Kids’. I have decided to choose upon this media text as it shows a positive representation of black people in the media. ‘My Wife And Kids’ staring and produced by Damon Wayans. A man playing a tragically funny quest for a "traditional" family.

Media Language

The show is based in the home, where majority of conflict happens in the confined area of the living room. The bright lighting helps to show the light hearted nature of the sitcom. The mise en scene is always the same as this is typical of all sitcoms.

Audience

Targeted at both males and females. It appeals to people of all ages but specifically to teenagers.

Economic Context: as it is a sitcom it would be low budget, as they do not change the mise en scene.
